Eric is one of New Zealand’s most popular sporting personalities – he began his rugby life as a flanker with Auckland and moved to North Harbour in 1991. He changed position to the wing in 1992 where his speed and ball skills already being utilised as a Sevens player, won him an All Black jersey. He played 29 matches for the All Blacks including 9 tests, with a test debut at the World Cup in South Africa in 1995.
He has a history of sporting achievements – he played for the NZ Maori team from 1987-1998, NZ Volley Ball Team Under 17’s, New Zealand Touch team, and was the NZ Light Heavyweight Boxing Champ at one time.
He is one of the world’s greatest Rugby Sevens exponents and a New Zealand Rugby Sevens player for 16 years. Eric has captained the NZ team and has led the team to victory in both the prestigious Fiji and Hong Kong Sevens, a feat topped off by winning the World Sevens series and the Sevens World Cup.
Eric has led the NZ team to victory in many tournaments around the world the most notable at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester when they received gold medals for New Zealand at both events. They also carried off the very deserved “Team of the Year” award at the 2002 Steinlager Sports Awards. He’s now passing on his skills coaching Auckland sevens rugby.
Eric graduated as a Barrister & Solicitor in 1988 and practiced Law in Auckland. He’s written three books - “Gold Rush” published early in 1999 - the very popular “Rushie” released in 2002 and “Adrenalin Rush” a collection of his works published 2004. Although renowned for his rugby success, he's a director of a corporate development company actively involved in designing and developing successful personal growth and training programmes for the NZ Rugby Union and a wide cross-section of business and corporate clients.
Eric brings his experience and skills in leadership, teamwork and motivation to the business arena with presentations & workshops and he's a brilliant after dinner and inspirational speaker. He has an excellent sense of humour and relates well to all business groups.
