Heather Swan is an accomplished business woman, mountaineer, rock climber, BASEjumper, skydiver and an author, wife, and the mother of two children and two stepchildren.

In her corporate career Heather held senior positions in Marketing and Management in both private and public sector organizations ranging from Asia Pacific Marketing Director for Information Resources, the world’s largest Market Research Firm, to National Manager of Harry M. Miller’s high profile speaker’s bureau.

Most recently, on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), she set up and managed the hugely successful business unit ‘Olympic Communicators’ which has since been modelled by National Olympic Committees (NOC’s) around the world.

In 1999, together with her husband Dr. Glenn Singleman, Heather embarked on a highly ambitious project to attempt to break Glenn’s World Record for Altitude BASEjumping which he set in 1992 from The Great Trango Tower in Pakistan at 20,000 feet or 6248 metres high. When she started the project she had never been skydiving or climbed any mountain.

The Australian Film Finance Corporation and ABC Television documentary, ‘BASEClimb 2 – Defying Gravity’ which screened around the world on National Geographic Channel and in Australia for the first time in September 2002, tells the incredible story of how Heather overcame a near fatal training accident and her subsequent terror to develop the physical skill and fitness to take on the world record attempt, all while successfully juggling her family, life and career.

Heather is the author of ‘Defying Gravity, Defying Fear’ (published by ABC Books), which was recently honoured as a finalist in the world’s largest and most prestigious mountain, adventure book festival held annually in Canada.

Her second book 'No Ceiling' is the result of a 6-year journey of physical, mental and emotional extremes. Over those long years, Heather transformed herself from a 'safe' corporate mum into a world-class extreme sport athlete capable of challenging an iconic world record. As well as changing her body-habitus (from 36% fat to 15% fat), she changed her attitude to life, her attitude to love, her attitude to family and her attitude to the 'glass ceiling' that is supposed to prevent women from achieving their full potential.

She endured setbacks, tragedy, humiliation and pain to ultimately triumph in the most macho of male dominated sports: rockclimbing, mountaineering, skydiving and BASEjumping. Throughout the most gruelling of extreme boot camps she never lost touch with her femininity, her emotional balance and her radiant beauty. The world record she ultimately achieved shattered conventional wisdom and prejudice about the 'role' and 'limits' of women (and men!).

You will be inspired by Heather’s personal journey and some incredible footage of her BASEJumps.

Testimonials

A sincere note of thanks for your contribution to the success of the Investor Group Financial Planning Conference. The audience was totally enthralled throughout your presentation and it was obvious from the accolades that your story was both inspiring and appreciated. The post-conference written evaluation submitted by our delegates, registered your segment as outright EXCELLENT. Congratulations Heather I look forward to working with you again.”
Annette Pendergast, Managing Director - Conference Venues and Booking Services (CVBS)

Thanks again for a wonderful presentation on Saturday. As I said afterwards, I have been fortunate enough to hear many world-class speakers over the years including many Olympic Gold Medallists and world political leaders. But yours was the most inspirational and powerful I think I have ever seen. Being the father of two young daughters, I would have dearly loved to have them present at your presentation and my family will definitely be glued to the TV when your film airs on the ABC”.
John Andrews Dip.FP, Practice Development Manager - Investor Financial Planning Pty Ltd
