Murray left school at 15 with no qualifications. By the age of 23 he was Managing Director of CBS Records New Zealand, the youngest Managing Director of that group in the world. With a strong desire to be self-employed he left the corporate life 23 years ago to “have a go” on his own. He won the government tender to introduce personalised number plates in New Zealand but his real passion was in the music business so he sold Personalised Plates and started a boutique music company.
With Dave Dobbyn already signed for the "Loyal" album in 1986 Murray quickly added Carl Doy to produce top selling "Piano by Candlelight" - released into over 35 countries and the biggest selling NZ album ever with over a million copies! A second "Piano by Candlelight" album sold twice as many copies as the first and proved something about opportunities for Murray - "opportunities don't shout; they whisper and can pass you by in a moment of time".
Combining Carl Doy and sax player Brian Smith filled a need in the market with "Moonlight Sax" and the album "Standing Ovation" with the late Rob Guest followed Rob's success with "Les Miserables". The album had all the show tunes, Miss Saigon, Les Mis, etc and two weeks after the signing with Murray, Rob was signed as lead singer in "Phantom of the Opera".
Then followed an opportunity to combine music performed by Carl Doy, Martin Winch and the NZSO with Geoff Blackwell's collection of extraordinary and geographically diverse images portraying humanity's "Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship" (M.I.L.K) and the "Together Collection" became a winning 10 CD collection - Oprah Winfrey named it "her favourite thing" of the year - another show featured "Miracle" a collaboration with Celine Dion and photogrpaher Anne Geddes.
Murray was named as one of the Top 10 Entrepreneurs of the Decade and his most recent creation - “The Great New Zealand Songbook” includes two CD’s featuring selections of the best New Zealand music of the Last Century and This Century. Forty of New Zealand’s favourite recording artists including Split Enz, Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Opshop, Bic Runga, Brooke Fraser and many more have contributed handwritten lyrics, photos and memorabilia, in their own double page spreads. The iconic cover art of ‘Charlie, The Four Square Man’ holding a guitar is an original work by acclaimed New Zealand artist Dick Frizzell and was commissioned specifically for this release.
Murray is regarded as one of the country's top entrepreneurs - he has a real passion for music, producing and delivering world-class music to the international market from his beachside office in St Heliers. His other passion is sailing and in 2005 he won the World Laser Masters championship in Brazil.
Murray is inspired by people like the late Rob Guest and Celine Dion who have to deliver a standing ovation night after night and he strongly believes in having a balance between work and leisure. The sign on his office door says it all: "Registered office of the Together Partnership. Please note: When the wind exceeds 15 knots this office becomes the St Heliers Bay Yacht Club. MEMBERSHIP BY INVITATION"
